July Fourth Fireworks Safety Announcement

On behalf of the men and women of the San Francisco Police Department, I would like to wish you all a happy Independence Day. While many people will be heading out to enjoy the nice weather and take advantage of the holiday weekend, San Francisco’s Finest will be working to ensure that the public has a safe Independence Day Holiday.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that fireworks are unpredictable and dangerous, especially in the hands of amateurs. In the City and County of San Francisco, ALL fireworks are illegal, even those billed as ‘safe and sane.” Possession of fireworks in San Francisco is a crime punishable by fine, incarceration in county jail or both.

In light of the recent hot weather and serious drought conditions that exist throughout the region, the threat of fire from fireworks is very real. Something as simple as a sparkler burns at temperatures of up to 1,800 degrees, a temperature hot enough to melt metal. There are numerous fireworks displays throughout the Bay Area so leave fireworks to the professionals.
