The San Francisco Police Department Internal Affairs Division initiated an investigation of an officer based on information gathered from other Department members. This investigation, which began in the summer of 2015, revealed that a police officer manufactured and was in possession of a prohibited AR-15 style assault rifle and AR-15 receiver components.

On July 26, 2016, Thomas Abrahamsen, 50 year-old, a Berkeley resident, surrendered himself and was booked at San Francisco County Jail for one felony count of manufacture of an assault weapon in violation of 30600(a)PC and one felony count of possession of an assault weapon in violation of 30605(a)PC.

The public’s trust is of the utmost importance to the members of the SFPD and the Department will continue to work hard to build and maintain this trust. “In the spirit of the Not on My Watch initiative, Department members will continue to hold each other accountable and will act swiftly to report any behavior that might bring dishonor to the Police Department,” said Acting Chief of Police Toney Chaplin.

The SFPD Internal Affairs Division worked with and provided the completed investigation to the District Attorney's Office. Abrahamsen, an 18-year veteran is currently on unpaid administrative leave. A booking photo was not available at the time of this press release.
