SFPD Mission District Officers Arrest Suspect in Smart Phone Strong Arm Robbery

On August 4, 2016, Mission Station officers were in the area of 17th and Hoff Streets when they were hailed by a person walking westbound on 17th Street. That person pointed at a man walking nearby and stated that the man had stolen his cell phone.

The officers immediately detained the man. The victim told officers that as he was walking on Mission Street playing Pokemon Go, the suspect walked up to him and snatched his cell phone from his hands. The victim informed officers that he chased the suspect and demanded the return of his cell phone, threatening to strike the suspect with a bottle if he did not get his cell phone back.

The victim stated the suspect placed his hands into the front of his pants and threatened to shoot him if he came at him with the bottle. The victim stated that, based on the actions of the suspect, he believed that he did possess a gun.  The suspect was subsequently detained.  The victim was able to unlock the cell phone that the suspect had in his possession by scanning his fingerprint and showed officers a digital image of himself on the phone.  No gun was found on the suspect.

Officers subsequently booked 23 year-old Damarea Williams-Evans for felony strong-arm robbery, terrorist threats, narcotics related charges, and numerous active South San Francisco, Santa Clara and Marin County warrants.
