San Francisco Police Arrest Four Suspects in Connection with January 16, 2021 Shootout in the Tenderloin District 21-013

On January 16, 2021, at approximately 9:08 PM, San Francisco Police officers responded to the area of Eddy and Taylor Streets regarding a shooting. The investigation determined that members of at least two groups exchanged gunfire on the street.

Three victims, a 37-year-old male, a 30-year-old female, and a 30-year-old male, were transported by private vehicles to a hospital in Oakland, California. All three were listed in non-life-threatening status.

Two additional victims, both 44-year-old males were admitted to a San Francisco hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Evidence including firearms has been seized.

An investigation by the SFPD Night Investigations Unit (NIU) determined that four of the injured parties were active participants in the gun battle.

Thirty-year-old Cory James Howard of Stockton was re-booked on the following charges: Carrying a Loaded Firearm (25850(a) PC), and Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm (29800(a)(1) PC) and Carrying a Concealed Firearm 25400(a)(2) PC). Cory Howard is on supervised probation in Santa Clara County for a prior burglary conviction.

Karmal Howard, age 44 of Antioch was re-booked on the charges of Carrying a Concealed Firearm in a Vehicle (25400 (a)(1) PC), Carrying a Concealed Firearm on One’s Person (25400(a)(2) PC), Carrying a Loaded Firearm (25850(a) PC), Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm (29800(a)(1) PC) and Providing False Information to a Peace Officer (148.9 PC).

Karmal Howard is on parole from Alameda County for a prior robbery conviction.

Robert Mitchell, age 44 of San Francisco was re-booked on the following charges: Carrying a Concealed Firearm on One’s Person (25400(a)(2) PC), Carrying a Loaded Firearm (25850(a) PC), Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm (29800(a)(1) PC. Mitchell is on felony probation in San Francisco for a prior domestic violence conviction.

A fourth subject continues to receive medical treatment and is expected to be booked upon release from the hospital.
