San Francisco Police Officers Initiate CPR, Help Save Two Lives 20-066

On Sunday, June 28, 2020, at approximately 3:36 PM, San Francisco Police officers from Bayview Station responded to the 1500 block of Jerrold Avenue regarding an unconscious infant. Officers arrived on scene and found an 8 month-old baby unresponsive and not breathing. Officers immediately started CPR and rescue breathing on the child. The officers continued the life-saving measures until paramedics arrived and took over care of the child. The child was transported to a local hospital. The child was admitted to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition. The SFFD Rescue Captain, who responded to the scene, credited the officers' quick action with saving the baby's life.

On Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at approximately 11:20 PM, two SFPD officers from the Northern District Station were conducting an auto theft investigation on the unit block of Olive Street. The officers saw a male near the stolen car and attempted to engage him in conversation. The male did not respond. Officers determined that the man, a 58-year-old Richmond resident had no pulse. The officers summoned an ambulance and began CPR. They continued CPR until San Francisco Fire Department Paramedics arrived and took over care. The man was revived at the scene and was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Medics relayed that the officers’ early intervention by performing CPR helped to save the man’s life.

“More than some San Franciscans may realize, police officers sworn to protect public safety in our City are often called upon with little notice to save lives,” said Chief of Police William Scott. “Our Bayview Station officers’ response was instrumental in helping to save a vulnerable 8-month-old. Our Northern Station officers’ actions shifted in a split second from investigating a stolen car to initiating CPR to save a man until paramedics could arrive. Similarly, San Francisco Police Officers this year have already administered record-setting numbers of lifesaving Narcan to victims of opioid overdoses citywide. I’m proud to lead a police department of men and women who react fearlessly and immediately, in all kinds of circumstances, to save lives. For exhibiting the very best values of our department and our City, all of these officers deserve our gratitude.”

These officers have been nominated for the San Francisco Police Department’s “Life Saving Award” which is granted to officers who directly intervene in a medical emergency by administering first aid and whose intervention directly resulted in saving the victim’s life.
