SFPD Recruits Join the Walk for Mental Illness Education and Support

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a nationwide organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI was one of the organizations that worked with the San Francisco Police Department to develop its current Crisis Intervention Training for police officers.

On Saturday, May 30, 2015, approximately fifty recruits from the San Francisco Police Academy will join members of their training cadre at this year’s “NAMI Walks” in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The Golden Gate Park walk is one of 84 nationwide events to raise money benefiting NAMI’s awareness and education programs.

“As a member of the San Francisco Police Department, I feel very honored and privileged to work with NAMI San Francisco. This partnership brings education, awareness and attention to the subject of mental health crisis and how it affects millions of Americans and their families. As a family, my husband, my daughter and I will be walking with many members of the San Francisco Police Department in an effort to raise funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness,” said Sgt. Angela Wilhelm of the SFPD Administration Bureau.

Opening events for this year’s walk commence at 10:00AM in Lindley Meadow of Golden Gate Park. The actual walk steps off at 11:00AM. It’s not too late to join as either a walker or a volunteer.
