San Francisco Police Make Arrest in Pier 14 News Crew Robbery

On July 27, 2015 San Francisco Police Investigators, with the assistance of theOakland and Fremont Police Departments, arrested a person responsible for atelevision news crew robbery during which cameras from NBC Bay Area and Fox-2were stolen. The news crews were conducting a follow-up story to the recent homicideat Pier 14 when they were robbed at gun point by two armed suspects and a thirdsuspect who was acting as a getaway driver. The robbers assaulted a cameraman andtook the two cameras from the news crews.

Investigators combed through the evidence and with the assistance of Oakland PoliceDepartment Special Investigations Unit, they identified a black BMW 7 Series sedanthat matched the description of the vehicle used in the Pier 14 robbery. Using theinformation regarding the vehicle, San Francisco Police Investigators identified MichaelAnthony Jones, 23, of San Francisco as a suspect in this case.

Officers from the San Francisco Police Department conducted surveillance and locatedJones and the BMW at a Motel 6 in Fremont, California. With the assistance of theFremont Police Department, Jones was arrested after a brief foot pursuit as he wasleaving a room at the motel in Fremont. Jones is known to have affiliation to a SanFrancisco gang. He was later booked into San Francisco County Jail on charges of:robbery, aggravated assault, grand theft and conspiracy. He was also booked onseveral outstanding warrants for crimes including: burglary, narcotics, hit and run andevading peace officers. Jones was also on felony probation in San Francisco for a priorfirearm offense. Jones remains in custody.

This is still an active and ongoing investigation and SFPD Investigators are still lookingfor additional suspects. The San Francisco Police Department would like to thank theOakland and Fremont Police Departments for their assistance in making this arrestwhich came just weeks after the robbery. “We’ve known for a long time that manycriminals move back and forth across the Bay,” said Police Chief Greg Suhr. “Thisinvestigation represents just one example of the spirit of cooperation between BayArea Law Enforcement.” “Currently, there are several Oakland Police Recruitsattending the SFPD Academy and as those Oakland Officers make connections andbuild relationships with San Francisco Police Officers, we can expect this spirit of team work to continue.”
