SFPD Officer Involved Shooting on Treasure Island
On October 24, 2015 at approximately 8:15AM, San Francisco Police responded to the area of Chestnut and Lyon Streets in the Northern District on the report of a person armed with a knife. Upon arriving at the scene, officers located a male matching the suspect description and attempted to detain him for further investigation. The suspect, prior to being detained, led the officers on a foot pursuit with him subsequently making entry into a fully marked SFPD patrol vehicle with the key still in the ignition. An officer attempted to prevent the suspect from taking the SUV, however, the suspect was ultimately able to steal the vehicle and drive away. The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to SFGH for treatment.
The stolen SFPD vehicle was later located traveling on city streets and a pursuit ensued. The stolen police vehicle was involved in several hit and run collisions with other civilian vehicles.
The pursuit ultimately led to Treasure Island, where responding officers secured the main gate in an effort to apprehend the suspect. The suspect accelerated the vehicle at a high rate of speed onto the sidewalk. Fearing for the safety of pedestrians on the sidewalk, citizens and other officers in the immediate area, two officers discharged their department firearms at the suspect. No one was struck by the officer’s gunfire.
The suspect continued fleeing from police and proceeded to the Westbound on ramp of I80, where he collided with a vehicle at the stop sign.
The suspect then exited the stolen patrol vehicle and jumped from the upper deck of the Bay Bridge to the lower deck, an approximate 30-40 feet drop. The suspect subsequently attempted to carjack another vehicle from the lower deck.
Disregarding his own personal safety, an officer jumped down onto the lower deck as well. The officer pursued the suspect and prevented him from carjacking a motorist on the bridge, ultimately taking the suspect into custody.
Two officers, one motorist, and the suspect were all transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
