SFPD Make Arrest in Northern District Homicide (17-085)

On June 2, 2017, at 2:18 AM San Francisco Police officers responded to the 2500 block of Van Ness Avenue in the Northern District regarding an unconscious male that was a victim of an assault. Upon arrival, the officers found the victim, Mathew Bate, a 33 year old Australian citizen, suffering from severe head trauma. San Francisco Fire Department paramedics responded and rendered aid, but unfortunately Bate succumbed to his injuries at San Francisco General Hospital.

Based on information and evidence immediately obtained at the scene, officers located and detained a possible suspect inside a hotel on the 2500 block of Van Ness Avenue. San Francisco Police Homicide Investigators were notified and began an investigation. At the conclusion of an interview with the detainee, it was determined this individual was responsible for Bate’s murder. The suspect was identified as David Murillo, a 34 year old Hesperia, California resident. Murillo was booked into San Francisco County Jail on a felony charge of murder.

Due to pending identification matters, the subject’s booking photo will not be released at this time.
