SFPD Investigate Mission District Shooting Suspect in Custody Following an Overnight Shooting Involving CHP Officers 19-033

San Francisco Police Investigate Mission District Shooting Victim Died at ZSFGH. SFPD Homicide Detail Now Has the Investigation On March 25, 2019 at approximately 3:52PM, San Francisco Police officers from Mission Police Station responded to a call of a shooting on the 200 block of 13th Street.
Upon arrival, officers located the male victim, 19 year-old San Francisco resident Taiepisi Gutu in the lobby of a California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR) building. The victim was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital. Mr. Gutu died at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH) on March 27, 2019.
The suspect, 20 year-old Hakim Odem of El Cerrito, CA was taken into custody in Riverside County following an officer involved shooting with member of the California Highway Patrol near Blythe, CA on March 26th (see SFPD News Release 19-033 for further details).
San Francisco Police Department homicide investigators have obtained a District Attorney’s warrant for Odem’s arrest on the charge of murder. Odem remains in custody in Southern California.

On March 25, 2019 at approximately 3:52PM, San Francisco Police officers from Mission Police Station responded to a call of a shooting on the 200 block of 13th Street.
Upon arrival, officers located the male victim, a 19 year-old San Francisco resident, in the lobby of a California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR) building. The victim was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital. He remains in life threatening status. No CDCR personnel were involved in the incident.
A suspect was identified and information regarding the suspect and his vehicle- a silver Ford Focus sedan- was disseminated to law enforcement. On Monday night, SFPD investigators received word that the suspect vehicle had registered on an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) in Southern California. San Francisco Police investigators alerted California Highway Patrol (CHP) offices in Southern California that the suspect was likely in their patrol areas.
At approximately 3:10AM on Tuesday, March 26th, CHP officers in the Blythe area located the suspect vehicle abandoned on Interstate 10 near the Arizona border. A short time later, CHP officers located the suspect and were involved in an officer involved shooting (OIS). The suspect was taken into custody. No CHP officers were injured. The circumstances of the OIS are under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
San Francisco Police investigators will be coordinating with the Riverside County Sheriff and are expected to travel to Southern California to continue the investigation into Monday’s shooting on 13th Street.
