SFPD concludes virtual town hall on May 19 officer-involved shooting fatality at Mariposa and Owens Streets 22-067(b)

The San Francisco Police Department has concluded its virtual town hall on a May 19, 2022, officer-involved shooting incident that claimed the lives of Mr. Michael Macfhionghain, 57, and Mr. Rafael Mendoza, 49. The virtual event was recorded on video on the following online platforms. The Vimeo version offers unabridged raw video, portions of which were edited out of the YouTube and Facebook versions for the sake of time for the town hall.

On the evening of May 19, 2022, at approximately 7:48 p.m., San Francisco Police officers responded to Mariposa and Owens Streets regarding an aggravated assault in progress. Officers arrived on scene and located two males, Mr. Michael Macfhionghain and Mr. Rafael Mendoza. During this contact, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Officers rendered aid to Macfhionghain and Mendoza and summoned medics to the scene. Medics declared Macfhionghain deceased at the scene and transported Mendoza to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries. Mr. Mendoza succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Initially investigated by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the California Department of Justice subsequently took over the officer-involved shooting investigation. The events leading up to the officer-involved shooting are being investigated by the SFPD Investigative Services Detail (ISD). Other investigations underway into the incident include; the San Francisco Department of Police Accountability (DPA); and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME).
