The San Francisco Police Department has concluded its virtual town hall on the December 20, 2024, officer-involved shooting incident that occurred between uniformed San Francisco Police officers and 50-year-old Peter Francis Hodge Jr. The Vimeo version offers unabridged raw video, portions of which have been edited out of the YouTube version for the sake of time for the town hall.

On December 19, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., uniformed officers with the San Francisco Police Department responded to the area of Kearny and Post streets after a vehicle drove onto a sidewalk at a high rate of speed and struck two pedestrians. The vehicle continued after a bicyclist, who was struck in the area of Sutter and Kearny streets. The vehicle then fled the scene.
Officers located the pedestrians, one adult female and one juvenile female, who were suffering from injuries. Officers rendered aid and paramedics transported both victims to a local hospital for their non-life-threatening injuries. Officers were unable to locate the bicyclist.
At approximately 1:35 a.m. on December 20, 2024, officers located the suspect vehicle in the area of Grant Ave. and Post Street.
Officers coordinated a strategic plan and set up a perimeter to safely approach the occupied vehicle. During the encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The armed male suspect was struck by gunfire. Officers rendered aid and requested paramedics to the scene. Paramedics transported the suspect to a local hospital. Despite the lifesaving efforts of medical staff, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
During the investigation, a firearm was recovered at the scene.
This incident is being investigated by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office; the San Francisco Police Department Investigative Services Division (ISD); the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office (ME); the San Francisco Police Department Internal Affairs Division (IAD); and the Department of Police Accountability (DPA).
All information is preliminary and could be subject to change. This remains an open and active investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available. As part of SFPD’s commitment to transparency and accountability, a town hall meeting regarding this officer-involved shooting will be held within ten days.
