Recruits and Training Officers were en-route to Bay to Breakers Traffic Control Detail

On Sunday, May 17th at 5:03 A.M., members of the 244th Recruit Class and their Police Academy Training Staff were en-route to a traffic control assignment to support the Bay to Breakers race. The Officers and Recruits were on a charted SF Muni bus when members of the recruit class saw a suspect inside a retail store on the 800 block of Market Street. The recruits saw the suspect smash a display case and alerted the police officers who then disembarked from the bus.

Officers stopped Cory Lawler, 37, male, of Fremont, California as he exited the store with a roller bag containing stolen merchandise. Additional Officers detained a man who was walking away from the scene after he dropped a jacket containing items stolen from the store. Dale Brackner, 55, male, of Brisbane, California and Lawler were both booked on burglary and possession of stolen property charges at the San Francisco County Jail.

“This arrest provided the recruits, who are in their 19th week of a 32 week course, an opportunity put their training into action and see first-hand how an arrest and investigation unfolds, sometimes in just a matter of seconds,” said Captain Greg Yee, Commanding Officer of the Police Academy.
