San Francisco Police Make Arrest in Bayview Shooting 21-039
On Saturday, January 23, 2021, at approximately 8:28 a.m., San Francisco Police officers from Bayview Station responded to the area of 3rd Street and Palou Avenue for a report of a shooting. Officers met with employees from a grocery store located on the 4800 block of 3rd Street who told them that they heard gunfire coming from outside and observed that a storefront window was shattered as a result.
Officers obtained video surveillance of the incident, which showed a light-colored vehicle driving southbound on the 4800 block of 3rd Street. An unknown suspect fired several shots, from inside the vehicle, in the direction of a second unknown suspect standing on the sidewalk. The second suspect produced a firearm and returned fire at the vehicle as it fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
Investigators from the SFPD Gang Task Force developed information that led to the identity of the suspects. They were identified as 26-year-old Jermaine McDonald and 26-year-old Kenneth Matthews, both of San Francisco.
On Wednesday, January 27, 2021, McDonald was taken into custody in the area of 6th and Jessie Streets. While taking McDonald into custody officers located a loaded, semi-automatic firearm in his pocket.
Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Matthews. On Thursday, February 4, 2021, Matthews was taken into custody in the area of Taylor and Eddy Streets without incident.
McDonald was taken to San Francisco County Jail and booked on charges of attempted homicide (664/187 PC), assault with a firearm (245(a)(2) PC), felon in possession of a firearm (29800(a)(1) PC), carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle (25850(a) PC), carrying a concealed firearm (25400(a)(2) PC) and probation violation (1203.2(a) PC).
Matthews was taken to San Francisco County Jail and booked on charges of attempted homicide (664/187 PC), felon in possession of a firearm (29800(a)(1) PC), and a firearm possession enhancement (12021.1 PC).
While arrests have been made, this remains an open investigation.
