San Francisco Police Arrest Sexual Assault Suspect

On May 5, 2016 at approximately 10:00 AM, San Francisco Police responded to an assault that occurred on Webster and Buchanan Streets in the Northern District. The suspect had followed the 53 year old female victim for a few blocks before attacking her. The victim was able to escape without any injuries, but the suspect fled and was last seen traveling eastbound on Grove Street towards City Hall. The suspect was described as a white male, dark blonde hair, approximately 6’0” to 6’3”, wearing a white long sleeve shirt with an orange vest, and white pants. The clothing was also described as being dirty.  Police investigators issued an internal “crime alert” within the Police Department and the Media Relations Unit passed the information to the news media with an appeal for public assistance in locating the suspect.  An officer from Southern Police Station saw the crime alert and recognized the suspect from prior police contacts.  That officer provided the suspect’s name, identifying information and that the suspect claimed to hang out in the Chinatown area. On May 6, 2016 at approximately 10:50 AM, approximately 24 hours after the assault, officers from Central Police Station detained a man matching the suspect description in Portsmouth Square Park.  The officers had previously viewed both the crime alert and the email from the Southern Station officer and they also recognized the suspect as someone they had contacted in the past. The victim was brought to the scene and she positively identified Adam Berglund, male, 30 as the suspect. Berglund was transported to Central Police Station and later booked into San Francisco County Jail on the following charges: assault with intent to commit rape and sexual battery, both felonies.  Berglund’s booking photo accompanies this news release.
