Active Shooter Incident (17-089)

On June 14, 2017 at 8:55 AM, San Francisco Police officers responded to a shooting at the UPS building located at 17th Street and San Bruno Avenue. Upon arrival, officers quickly determined that this incident was an active shooter situation and formed teams to immediately enter the building to locate and stop the shooter. Several teams located victims who had been shot and brought them out of the building to where they could receive medical attention. During this time, another team of officers located the suspect, Jimmy Lam, a 38 year-old San Francisco resident, who turned a gun on himself and committed suicide.

Four persons including the shooter died. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the four male decedents as:

CHAN, Wayne, age 56, a resident of San Francisco, CA

LAM, Jimmy, age 38, a resident of San Francisco, CA

LEFITI, Michael, age 46, a resident of Hercules, CA

LOUIE, Benson, age 50, a resident of San Francisco, CA

Two other shooting victims were transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where they were treated and released later in the evening. Five additional persons were treated and released from various San Francisco Hospitals for non-life threatening injuries sustained while escaping from the building.
