Great Highway Abandon Child (17-088)

On June 5th, 2017, witnesses observed a female throwing items out of her vehicle on the 2800 block of the Great Highway. Shortly thereafter, witnesses observed the female push her 5-year old daughter out of the stationary vehicle causing the child to land on the concrete. The female then drove away with her one-year old son leaving her daughter unattended and uncared for. Paramedics who were in the immediate area witnessed a portion of the incident. The medics treated the child who did not appear to be injured.

A male on a skateboard was observed leaving the scene on foot at the same time the female was observed throwing items out of the vehicle. It does not appear that the male witnessed the child being pushed out of the car by the female. The male has been identified as the father of the one-year old that was in the vehicle and the female was identified as the mother of both children. SFPD officers searched hotels along the Great Highway for both parents but were unable to locate either parent.

Earlier this evening, contact was made with the father of the infant who has cooperated with investigators. The father disclosed where the infant child was located and SFPD Special Victims Unit investigators along with Child Protective Services representatives located the infant child in Oakland with a baby sitter.

The daughter and infant child are now in the care of Child Protective Services. The mother of the children has surrendered herself into the custody of SVU investigators and is currently being interviewed.

As this is still an active and on-going investigation with interviews currently underway, no further information will be released tonight.
