Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do when I lose an item?

You can make a report at your local police station or call the Teleserve unit at 553-0123. Notify all your credit card companies, banks, cell phone carrier, etc.
What can I do besides contacting the police?
Try to retrace your steps from the last time you saw your item. If you were in a public place like a restaurant, store, etc., ask the employees if they found any items that match your property description.
Can I check the pawnshops for my lost item?
When someone pawns an item, they are getting a loan for 4 months. During that time, the pawnshops are prohibited to display the item. If someone sells the item outright to the pawnshop, the pawnshop is required by law to wait 30 days before releasing it for display.
How can I help the police locate my item if it was pawned?
Pawnshops are required by law to submit a copy of every transaction. It is important that you have a complete description of your item including serial number when reporting it lost to the police. The Fencing unit can then keep an eye out for any possible matches.
