Homemade Explosives Recovered in the Mission District

On July 3, 2012 at 2:30 pm Police were notified by a concerned citizen that a person residing on the 3300 blk of 22th St. in the Mission district might be in possession of home made explosives. Mission police officers arrived at the scene to further investigate the incident. Upon speaking with the resident, (Identified as Jerry Lopez, 44 yrs old, San Francisco resident) officer’s were given consent to enter and search the premise for illegal explosive devices. During the search officers discovered approximately sixty-three explosive devices. Some of these explosives are considered a larger equivalent or equal to the military grade M1000’s. The overall amount recovered was the equivalent of approximately 12 ½ sticks of dynamite. Officers also discovered a handgun that was in possession by the resident who is a convicted felon. A one block perimeter was set up in all directions surrounding the resident, people were asked to shelter in place while EOD units conducted a sweep of the resident. Once the scene was declared safe, officers were able to open up the streets and lift the shelter in place.
Lopez was booked at San Francisco County Jail and is charged with 1 counts of 18730 PC – Possession of Destructive Devices (Felony), 63 count of 12305 H&S – Possession of Explosives (Felony), 1 count of 12400 (c)(4) PC – Unlawful Possession of a Firearm of a Prohibited Person (Felony), and 1 count of 12700(b)(1) PC – Unlawful possession of fireworks (Misdemeanor).
