Every 15 Minutes DUI Program March 24-25

The S.F.P.D. is facilitating a presentation of Every 15 minutes on Thursday and Friday, March 24 and 25 at Saint Ignatius High School, 2001-37th Avenue.

Designed to demonstrate the far reaching and often deadly consequences of teen-age drinking and driving, Every 15 Minutes is a dramatic and emotionally charged two-day program, featuring a simulated car crash and its aftermath. Actual high school students are involved as role players during the program, which is observed by entire student body.

The simulated crash portion of the event will take place on Thursday at

37th Avenue
Quintara Street
at 11:00 a.m.  The crash is extremely realistic with uniformed police, fire and medical personnel responding and performing their duties as if an actual crash had occurred. The student “victims” in the vehicles are professionally made up to simulate traumatic injuries.  Following standard procedures, police will arrest the “drunk” driver.

During the exercise, the life-altering consequences of DUI are realistically brought home by taking students out of class every 15 minutes to become one of the “living dead” of DUI crashes. These students do not speak or interact with other students for the rest of the day, though they remain on campus. As part of the exercise, S.F.P.D. officers will make “death notifications” to the parents of these “living dead” students.

At the end of the day, those students who participated in the “crash” as well as the “living dead” go on an overnight retreat to experience the separation from family and friends. The next day, Friday, students and family will join in a mock funeral service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St.IgnatiusHigh School.  Speakers will include the “living dead” who will read letters to their parents they left behind. Persons who have experienced a life changing DUI incident will also speak.

With the exception of the overnight retreat, the media is welcome and encouraged to cover all aspects of this two-day event.
There will be a press briefing following the crash portion of the program Thursday, at approximately 12:05 p.m., at

37th Ave

Quintara Street
. Every 15 Minutes is a nationally recognized program that has had an extraordinary impact on the participants

and observers. In this program, everything is simulated -- except the emotions.
