|Police Seek Public's Help In Locating Gunman|
The San Francisco Police Department is seeking the public's help in locating a suspect who last night, Wednesday, at about 9:00 P.M. in the Union Square area accosted a pedestrian at gunpoint, holding him briefly as a hostage, and afterward threatened an employee at a hotel before escaping.
The incident began when police in a patrol vehicle observed a driver in a black Ford Taurus making an illegal turn in the Union Square area and followed the driver until he turned into Harlan Place, a dead-end street just off Grant. The suspect, armed with a handgun, got out of the car and began running. On Sutter at Grant, the suspect, still armed, accosted a male pedestrian and dragged him along as police gave chase on foot.
When the suspect and his hostage turned onto Stockton Street, the suspect released him, and then ran into the Campton Place Hotel on Stockton, where he accidentally fell down. Thinking that a person needed help, a hotel employee went to the suspect's aid. The suspect got up, threatened the employee with his gun, and then escaped from a side door inside the hotel onto Campton Place, eluding police.
A female passenger inside the suspect vehicle was arrested without incident.
Police have identified the suspect as Randall Daves, 49, of San Francisco.
