John Sanford

The Park Police District comprises the area bordered by Geary Boulevard, Steiner, Market, Upper Market, 7th Avenue and the vast east end of Golden Gate Park. The men and women officers at Park Station serve the communities of Cole Valley, Haight Street, the Western Addition, Twin Peaks, and the Duboce and Castro areas. They work in patrol cars, on foot beats, on buses, patrol wagons and off-road vehicles from the renowned bucolic stretches of Golden Gate park to the world-famous thoroughfares of Haight Street and Castro Street.

Built originally as quarters for the Mounted Unit, the station was reopened in 1995 after a complete refurbishing, maintaining the original 1910 Mission-style façade with its stucco walls and tile roof. The station is now an efficient, functional and secure place for officers, as well as a non-intimidating building for the residents and visitors on the surrounding neighborhoods.

Captain John Sanford Jr. is currently the Captain of Park Station and the Senior Captain in the SFPD. Born and raised in San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point, Sanford began his law enforcement career at age 14 as a Police Activities League cadet, and since then considers on-going training and certification a high priority. Sanford attended the old Woodrow Wilson High School in San Francisco; he holds a B.S. in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco, and a M.A. in Leadership from Saint Mary’s College of California.

Prior to his current role, Sanford held several Command positions within the SFPD including in the Special Operations Division, the Airport Bureau, Field Operation and the Investigation Bureaus. Sanford has additional experience as a Domestic Violence instructor, Recruitment, Field Training and Undercover Narcotics. Having served various roles in six out of the 10 SFPD stations, Sanford is well-versed in the complexities of running a police department in a diverse and dynamic city. Always looking forward to meeting and working with the community, he invites all Park District residents, merchants, and tourists to his monthly Community Meetings, and to the many community events hosted by Park Station throughout the year.

“We are truly the guardians of this world class city and as law enforcement officers, our dedication to duty and sincere contribution truly matters.”
-Captain Sanford.
