Each year in America during the New Year’s Eve and July 4th holidays, citizens die as a result of “Celebratory Gunfire.” Celebratory gunfire is the indiscriminate firing of weapons into the air. People who shoot into the air often do so without regard as to where the bullet may fall. In the worse case scenario the falling bullets land on the head of a child or other innocent bystander, causing serious injury or death. In less dramatic situations the bullets fall onto houses, businesses or vehicles causing damage. People should be aware that the reckless discharge of a firearm is a FELONY and those doing so can be subject to arrest.
It is imperative that we join together as a community to urge individuals possessing guns, to secure their weapons this holiday season and refrain from participating in celebratory gunfire. The San Francisco Police Department urges citizens to immediately call the police and report any unlawful discharge of a firearm on New Year’s Eve. We urge the community to be safe this New Year’s Eve.
To report reckless gunfire, please call 911.
