The official city venue for New Year's Eve in San Francisco will be on the Embarcadero, just south of the Ferry Building. The event is free to the general public. There will be a fireworks display at midnight at Mission Street and the Embarcadero. This family event is alcohol free. No public consumption of alcohol will be allowed. Additionally, for security reasons, no bottles or cans will be allowed into the venue.
Those attending the celebration are encouraged to enter the venue using streets other than Market or Mission. The fireworks cannot be seen from Market Street. Congestion on these streets becomes a public safety concern and may make it difficult to access the Embarcadero at all, let alone in time for the fireworks. People are encouraged to use public transportation. Muni will be free from 8:00 P.M. New Year's Eve to 6:00 A.M. New Year's Day, and BART is offering special fares and adding trains to all Bay Area destinations until 3:00 A.M.
Street closures from 8:00 P.M. to 4:00 A.M. include the Embarcadero between Washington and Harrison, and Market, Mission and Howard streets east of Spear.
The Public Affairs PIO will be available at a special media cell phone line, 850-6808, to be used at this New Year's Eve event only.
