The San Francisco Police Department will conduct a series of highly visible DUI saturation patrols throughout the month of December. Law enforcement officers will vigorously pursue DUI compliance through arrests to achieve greater traffic safety in San Francisco. On Saturday, December 20, highly visible patrols will saturate areas of frequent DUI-related arrests and traffic collisions throughout the City. This enforcement program is associated with the statewide Safe and Sober and Avoid programs, focusing on:
· Reducing the number of alcohol-related injuries from traffic collisions.
· Reducing the threat of alcohol-impaired drivers.
· Increasing the number of arrests for driving under the influence.
· Public education of the dangers of driving under the influence.
A zero tolerance to alcohol-impaired driving is in effect in the City and County of San Francisco. The Safe and Sober Winter Holiday Campaign will include several DUI checkpoints and highly visible saturation patrols until January 2, 2004.
During this enforcement campaign, law enforcement officers will promote and enforce the use of seatbelt and child safety seat laws.
Funding for the DUI checkpoints has been provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
