As part of its commitment to increasing child safety seat use, the San Francisco Police Department has launched a child passenger safety program to provide car seat checkups, enforce child passenger safety seat laws, and educate law enforcement personnel, health professionals, and parents. The implementation of this program has been made possible by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
Motor vehicle crashes account for over 40% of unintentional childhood injury-related deaths. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, children die each day and hundreds are injured in motor vehicle crashes, causing unimaginable emotional pain and costing over $35 billion.
Through this program, the San Francisco Police Department is committed to increasing child safety seat usage, decrease misuse, and prevent injuries and death to children that result from motor vehicle crashes.
