During the Holiday Shopping Season, the San Francisco Police Department will be conducting multiple Auto Burglary/Theft Abatement Operations in the downtown-shopping district.
The program was kick started this past Thanksgiving Weekend when enforcement teams made five-felony arrests for auto burglary in the downtown area. All the subjects arrested were either on felony probation or parole. Inspectors from the Auto Detail are working with the Office of the District Attorney to charge these individuals and revoke their probation or parole in addition to these arrests. Officers working the operation also prevented a number of would be crimes by their presence.
The department will continue to send teams of plain-clothes officers into the target area with an emphasis on the safety of the holiday shoppers and automobile related thefts. The operation includes patrol of the major downtown parking garages and the Pier 39 garage.
This is a collaborative effort between the Field Operations Bureau, the Bureau of Inspectors and the California Highway Patrol. CHP is providing equipment, resources, and personnel to aid in this operation.
Shoppers are urged to always lock their vehicles. Remember to store valuables in the trunks of their vehicles, and never leave their shopping bags in the passenger compartment of their vehicles.
