Subject:    Citywide Task Force Launches Awareness Campaign Against Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault

The Adult Sexual Assault Task Force (ASATF) is launching a “Who’s Watching Your Drink?” campaign on Sunday, October 3, at the Castro Street Fair ASATF booth, on Market Street between Castro and Noe streets, from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.  The media is invited to talk to ASATF members, who will be assembled as a group to reporters at 12 noon.

The ASATF members include Inspector Ron Reynolds, SFPD Sexual Assault Detail; Ann Brennan, SF Trauma Recovery, Rape treatment Center; Nina Jusef, SF Women Against Rape; and Nina Jo Smith, SF State University’s The Safe Place, a rape prevention education program.

San Francisco ASATF wants to raise awareness about drug-facilitated sexual assault, which are committed by spiking drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), often at clubs, parties, public gatherings or private encounters.  Drug-facilitated sexual assaults have been reported by people of all genders, sexual orientations, ages and races.  “We average two to four reports of DFSA in San Francisco every month, said Lieutenant Belinda Kerr, of the SFPD Sexual assault Detail.  “However, many go unreported,” she said.

ASATF will be distributing Who’s Watching Your Drink? “club cards,” to be displayed in clubs and bars throughout San Francisco.  It informs people about what they can do to prevent drug-facilitated sexual assault, and what to do if it happens to themselves or a friend.  At the fair, task force members will be wearing t-shirts displaying the ASATF logo and campaign slogan, “Who’s Watching Your Drink?”

ASATF is composed of individuals dedicated to ending sexual assault in San Francisco.  They represent city agencies, colleges and universities, and grass-roots, community-based organizations working to prevent sexual violence and to promote healing of sexual assault survivors.  This unique and visionary task force provides an opportunity for dedicated individuals from all walks of life to coordinate and mutually supports all efforts to eliminate sexual violence in San Francisco.
