Subject: Crisis Intervention Training Graduating Class September 24

The 31st Crisis Intervention Training Class will be graduating in a ceremony to be held on Thursday, September 24, in the Presidio at the Golden Gate Club, located by the main parade square, at 4:00 P.M. Twenty-eight candidates will receive their certificate of completion.

Crisis Intervention Training consists of a 40-hour class in police response to a situation involving a person with a mental disorder or disability. According to the course description, “In order to make appropriate decisions regarding intervention strategies, peace officers must be able to recognize, based on behavioral cues and other indicators, people with developmental disabilities. Peace officers must become familiar with the causes and nature of mental disorders in order to determine if an individual is a danger to self, danger to others and/or gravely disabled.”

Crisis Intervention Training was instituted in the San Francisco Police Department in May of 2001. To date, 867 SFPD officers and 53 non-SFPD personnel have been trained in Crisis Intervention. The program is ongoing, with the goal of training every SFPD officer in C.I.T.
