San Francisco Police arrested two suspects in separate incidents over the weekend in the Market and South of Market areas, recovering a loaded handgun in each incident.
In the first incident, which occurred on Sunday, August 31, at approximately 6:40 P.M., Southern Police Station officers approached a suspicious male suspect holding a shaving kit standing on the corner of Market and 6th streets. As the officers approached, the man began running with the officers in pursuit. While running, the suspect reached into his waistband and dropped a handgun in front of 995 Market. Still carrying the shaving kit, he ran onto 6th Street, doubling back to Market, where he discarded the kit in front of 1033 Market. With the help of other Southern units, the suspect was apprehended. The recovered gun was loaded and the kit contained various narcotic items, including cocaine.
Taken into custody was Eric Phillips, 28, of San Francisco. He was booked on charges of carrying a loaded weapon and various narcotic charges, and remains in custody.
The second incident, again involving Southern units, occurred on Monday, September 1, at approximately 11:30 P.M. While driving a marked police vehicle on Harrison at 8th streets, the officers observed a bicyclist without a headlight, a violation of the Vehicle Code. The officers activated the red light and siren but he continued bicycling into the shopping center parking lot on Bryant Street between 8th and 9th streets, clutching his waistband as he rode. He rode out of the parking lot's exit on 9th Street, tossing what turned out to be a loaded handgun into a doorway on 9th Street. Officers apprehended him on 9th Street at Bryant.
Taken into custody was Andre Westwalker, 23, of San Francisco. He was booked on charges of carrying a loaded firearm and carrying a concealed firearm. Westwalker remains in custody.
