San Francisco Police arrested a suspect yesterday evening, August 14, 2006, for an arson that had just occurred at approximately 8:00 P.M. at Corpus Christi Church, 62 Santa Rosa Avenue in San Francisco.
The San Francisco Fire Department responded to a call of a fire in progress. When San Francisco Police responded they were able to get a description of a suspect, which they broadcast. Additional officers immediately responded to the area and conducted a thorough search.
Officers located the suspect, Michael Wiegand, who matched the description that was broadcast, at Alemany and Congdon Streets approximately one half mile away. Officers detained Wiegand and were able to get a positive identification from a witness. Police then took Wiegand into custody.
Wiegand, 30, of San Francisco, has been charged with arson and burglary. He was booked into the San Francisco County Jail where he remains in custody.
Damage to the church is estimated to be $500,000.00. According to the Arson Inspector investigating this case, this does not appear to be a hate crime.
