San Francisco Police arrested a woman July 30 on charges of perjury, conspiracy to file a false kidnapping and sexual assault report, and resisting arrest. Taken into custody was Sharon Lee, 30, ofSan Francisco.
On July 12, Lee reported that four men had kidnapped her and had attempted to sexually assault her. The following day, Lee again contacted police and pointed out a man inside a vehicle in the Mission District, claiming that he was one of the four who had committed the crimes. Police arrested the suspect and booked him into County Jail.
Subsequent investigation showed that the man arrested was not involved in the incident as reported, and the charges were dropped. Further investigation revealed that Lee's report stemmed from a dispute between two groups that escalated to a physical fight. Investigators believe that Lee made her false claims in retaliation for the fight.
In this incident, because of false information provided to police, a suspect was arrested and incarcerated wrongfully, a matter of serious concern to police. The police department investigates all allegations of criminal conduct and encourages all victims and witnesses to report the incidents to the police.
