Subject: Conviction for Suspect in 2003 Jewelry Heist
Yesterday, June 6, a Superior Court jury convicted one of the three men responsible for a jewelry heist that occurred at Lang’s Antique and Estate Jewelry, 323 Sutter Street on April 7, 2003 . Dino L. Smith, 49, was convicted of three counts or robbery, three counts of false imprisonment, and one count of burglary and conspiracy. San Francisco Police Robbery Inspectors Dan Gardner and Dan Leydon arrested Dino Smith in New York City in June 2004. Sentencing is expected late next month. The daring robbery attracted national interest, and the incident was publicized on “America’s Most Wanted” television show.A second suspect in the incident, the defendant’s brother, Devin Smith, remains a fugitive with an FBI-authorized reward of $50,000 leading to his arrest and prosecution. The third suspect, George Turner, is awaiting trial.
