San Francisco police arrested a suspect in an early morning fire that occurred on the 500 block of Clayton on May 17 at 1:50 A.M. Taken into custody was Michael Scaletti, 24, a resident in the neighborhood.
Since August of 2008, there have been approximately 15 arson fires that have occurred on Downey Street and in the immediate neighborhood. The suspect would set recycling bins on fire that would ignite additional cars, trees, and buildings. Due to these arson fires, the police began conducting undercover surveillance in the area.
In the early morning of May 17th, officers observed Scaletti walking in the area of the Carl and Cole mini-park. Scaletti was then seen setting a bassinet on fire which was located between two garbage cans inside the park. Scaletti was immediately placed in custody and the fire was extinguished.
Scaletti was charged with arson of property.
