Today, Tuesday, April 27, at about 1:00 P.M., two officers on uniformed patrol in a marked police vehicle initiated an investigative vehicle stop on the 1000 block of Sunnydale Avenue because they recognized the driver as a person of interest. The officers got out of their patrol car to approach the driver. The officer who was the passenger opened the passenger door of the suspect vehicle, whereupon the driver threw his car into reverse, catching the officer between the door and the vehicle, dragging him. While being dragged, the officer fired at the suspect. It is not known whether or not the suspect was hit. The officer who was dragged was treated at SFGH and released.
The suspect in this case is Robert Edwards, 37, of San Francisco. Persons with information are urged to call 553-0123 or the Confidential Tip Line, 575-4444. If hospital medical staff encounters a man with a recent gunshot wound, they are asked to contact police immediately.
A photo of Edwards is available in the Public Affairs Office and in the Bureau of Investigations, Room 400, Hall of Justice.
