SFPD Mounted Unit Retires Three Horses April 10

The San Francisco Police Department will be retiring three horses from the Mounted Unit on Tuesday, April 10 at the Police Stables, Golden Gate Park, at 11:00 A.M. As part of an ongoing tradition, these horses will be honored for their service to the city prior to their arrival at a horse retirement ranch.

The ceremony will also honor the arrival of two new horses, an eight-year-old American quarter horse sorrel gelding named Rusty, and Seattle, an eight-year-old chestnut quarter-horse. They will both be sworn in and begin their police careers.

The horses retiring are:

Ernie, a 25-year-old sorrel American quarter horse gelding;

  • Chub, a 20-year-old chestnut-colored American quarter horse gelding, and
  • AAA Andy, a 15-year-old American quarter horse, sorrel gelding originally acquired through funding by the California State Automobile Association.

The Golden Gate Park Police Stables are located off John F. Kennedy Drive at 36th Avenue.
