San Francisco obtained a warrant yesterday, March 8, for the arrest of one of three suspects in an assault on two men that occurred last Wednesday, March 2, on 18th Street near Hartford Street in the Castro District at about 11:00 P.M. Inspectors from the San Francisco Police Department’s Hate Crime Unit yesterday arrested Jason Antoine Lawrence, 20, at a residence in Daly City. Lawrence remains in custody.
Just prior to the assault, the suspects yelled anti-gay epithets at the two victims. Both victims suffered major facial injuries from being punched and kicked.
The night of the incident, Inspector Milanda Moore of the SFPD’s Special Investigations Unit initiated an investigation. During the investigation, she determined the identity of one of the suspects and learned that he had an outstanding no-bail warrant. Inspector Moore directed Bayview Police Station officers and members of the Gang Task Force to attempt to locate and arrest this suspect. The investigation finally led to the Daly City residence.
SFPD Hate Crime inspectors have now tentatively identified additional suspects and continue their investigation, with anticipated additional arrests.
Persons with information about this incident are urged to contact Inspector Sally DeHaven of the Special Investigations Hate Crime Unit at 553-9140, or the Operations Center after hours at 553-1071.
