Subject: SAN FRANCISCO POLICE ARREST SUSPECT IN MARCH 4 ARSONS
San Francisco police arrested a suspect in two arsons that occurred within an hour of each other on Thursday, March 4, at a single family residence on the 2800 block of Broderick Street. Taken into custody was Conrad Niels, 52, of Rohnert Park.
Police and the Fire Department personnel responded to a call at the residence at approximately 4:00 P.M. The suspect, who has been living with his 81-year-old mother in the residence for the past three weeks, had set fire to miscellaneous papers after a verbal altercation with her. The mother called police. The suspect had fled prior to police and fire personnel responding.
During the police investigation inside the residence, at approximately 5:00 P.M., police smelled smoke and saw smoke coming from the heating vents. Police discovered that a fire had just been set in the basement of the three-story residence. The Fire Department returned to extinguish the blaze and police discovered the suspect, who allegedly set the basement fire, hiding in the backyard. The residence incurred substantial fire and smoke damage, but there were no injuries.
Niels was booked on various arson charges and remains in custody.
