San Francisco police arrested a suspect in a commercial robbery that occurred yesterday, February 23, at a 7-Eleven store on the 1200 block of Ocean Avenue at 11:20 P.M. Taken into custody was Leonard Washington, 21, of San Francisco. He was charged with robbery and remains in custody.

In this incident, Washington and a second suspect, both wearing ski masks, entered the store. One suspect placed a handgun against the head of one employee and ordered him to open the store’s two registers. The employee complied and the suspect took all the cash from the registers. When the employee was unable to open the safe, the suspect struck him three times in his neck area with the gun. During the robbery, one suspect went to the back of the store and held employees at bay at gunpoint.

The suspects fled in a black Chevrolet Malibu. Based on the vehicle description that had been broadcast, police located the vehicle at Monterey Boulevard and West Gate Drive in the Ingleside District, but lost sight of it. They finally located the vehicle that had crashed into two poles at San Jose Avenue and Randall Street. The suspects had fled before police arrived. Washington was arrested shortly afterward based on found evidence. At least one suspect remains outstanding.

Police are investigating a link with a similar robbery that occurred earlier in the evening at a restaurant on the 1400 block of 18th Street at 9:20 P.M. In this incident, two suspects, both wearing ski masks and one armed with a handgun, entered the restaurant and locked the door behind them.

One suspect placed the handgun against the head of a waiter and ordered him to open the register. The waiter complied and the suspect emptied the cash drawer. The other suspect confronted the nine patrons in the restaurant and ordered them at gunpoint to hand over their cash and electronic devices. All the victims complied. One suspect also robbed a waiter of the cash in his wallet.

After the robbery, which lasted from three to five minutes, the suspects fled on foot eastbound on 18th Street. No one was injured during the robbery.

There was video footage captured at both locations and investigators are in the process of obtaining and evaluating the images.

Investigators are attempting to link the suspects to other recent commercial robberies.
